Japan’s August CPI Holds Steady at 1.9% YoY, Matching July Pace

Japan’s national consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.9% year-over-year in August 2026, unchanged from the 1.9% annual increase recorded in July 2026. The data, updated on 17 September 2026, indicate that inflationary pressures in the Japanese economy remained stable heading into late summer.

On a year-over-year basis, the August reading reflects the same rate of price growth as in the prior month, underscoring a period of steady, moderate inflation. The comparison is made against the same month a year earlier, with both the current and previous figures measuring how prices have evolved over a 12-month horizon.

The persistence of the 1.9% national CPI rate suggests that, at least for now, Japan’s price dynamics are neither accelerating nor easing significantly on an annual basis, giving policymakers and markets a clear, if subdued, signal on the current inflation trend.
