German Export Growth Cools Sharply to 0.5% in March, Down from 3.6% in February

German export growth slowed markedly in March 2026, with month-over-month exports rising just 0.5%, down from a robust 3.6% increase in February 2026. The latest data, updated on 8 May 2026, highlight a clear deceleration in foreign demand for German goods after a strong start to the year.

On a month-over-month basis, the March figure shows that export momentum has weakened compared with the previous month, when February’s exports had recorded a solid gain versus January. While exports continued to expand in March, the much lower growth rate suggests that the earlier surge in outbound shipments has not been sustained at the same pace.

The comparison underscores that “actual” data for March reflect the change versus February, whereas the “previous” figure captures February’s increase relative to January. Together, the numbers point to a more cautious near-term outlook for Germany’s export sector as the strong February performance gives way to more modest growth.
